Social Security Disability Overview

The Social Security Administration provides two benefit programs for people unable to work due to physical or mental impairment.  These programs are Social Security Disability (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Social Security Disability (SSDI) is for workers covered by Social Security who have contributed to a Social Security for a sufficient period of time, usually 5 out of the last 10 years of work.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides disability benefits for people not covered by Social Security.

Cash Benefits

Social Security Disability provides two primary benefits: a monthly check. The amount of the monthly check is determined by a formula which takes into account the amount paid into Social Security and the length of time of employment.

Supplementary Security Income benefits range for $ 300-$900 a month in California depending on a number of factors.

Medical Benefits

Social Security Disability recipients are entitled to Medicare benefits if they have been disabled for two years after a five month waiting period.
This entitles them to have many medical expenses covered by Medicare.

Social Security recipients (SSDI) receive Medicare.
SSI recipients receive Medi-Cal.

The health care benefits provided by Social Security are essential for disabled persons
